What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words Ayur (Life) and Veda (Knowledge), meaning “The Knowledge of Life.”

It is an ancient Indian wellness science that focuses on balancing the body, mind, and skin by working with nature rather than against it.

Ayurveda is also known as the sister science of Yoga, guiding lifestyle, nutrition, and skincare to maintain natural harmony.

The Five Elements & Skin Health

According to Ayurveda, the human body and skin are made from five elements:

Earth • Water • Fire • Air • Ether

These elements combine to form three biological energies called Doshas, which determine your skin type, sensitivity, oil production, and aging pattern.

How Doshas Influence Your Skin

  • Vata Skin (Air + Ether)

    Vata skin is usually dry, thin, and delicate. It may feel rough, become flaky easily, and show fine lines earlier due to lack of moisture.

  • Pitta Skin (Fire + Water)

    Pitta skin tends to be sensitive and reactive, often showing redness, warmth, or pigmentation. It can also develop breakouts when exposed to heat.

  • Kapha Skin (Earth + Water)

    Kapha skin is naturally oily, thicker, and more prone to enlarged pores and congestion. Breakouts can occur due to excess oil and slower skin renewal.
